About

Tuesday, October 23, at 6:30pm
Manzulli Boardroom, Foundation Hall

Noted film critic and historian Annette Insdorf will discuss her latest book, CINEMATIC OVERTURES: HOW TO READ OPENING SCENES. The first few minutes of a film draw the viewer in and introduce us to the movie's narrative and thematic concerns, setting the stage for what's to come. Insdorf's talk will focus on opening sequences where music plays a major role, including clips from films such as APOCALYPSE NOW, TAXI DRIVER, THE CONFORMIST, AGUIRRE THE WRATH OF GOD, and THE HOURGLASS SANATORIUM.

Annette Insdorf is a professor of Film at Columbia University and host of the Reel Pieces series at the 92nd Street Y. She is the author of the seminal INDELIBLE SHADOWS: FILM AND THE HOLOCAUST, as well as definitive English-language studies of François Truffaut and Krzysztof Kieślowski.
Copies of CINEMATIC OVERTURES and INDELIBLE SHADOWS will be on sale at the bookstore as well as at the event. Insdorf will sign copies after her talk.
